Quick answer: Your first scan runs in about 30 seconds when you sign up. After that, Clever Shield keeps scanning data broker sites on an ongoing basis and re-runs the full removal cycle about every three months. Removals themselves can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of months depending on the site. If it has been a while since you saw new activity, that is usually normal, but here is how the timing works so you always know what to expect.

“I haven’t seen a scan in a while. Is something wrong?”

Probably not. Privacy protection is not a one-and-done event, it is a cycle that runs in the background. Because a lot of the work happens quietly between updates, it can feel like nothing is happening even when it is. Let us break down the actual schedule.

Your first scan: about 30 seconds

The moment you sign up, we run an initial scan and show you what is exposed across data broker sites, along with your starting Shield Score. This is the fast one, designed to give you a clear picture right away.

Ongoing scans: continuous, with removals on a cycle

After that first scan, two things happen on different rhythms:

  • Scanning continues on an ongoing basis so we can spot new exposures as they appear.
  • Full removal cycles re-run roughly every three months. We re-scan the broker sites, compile what is listed, submit removal requests, and then verify the data is actually gone.

Why every three months? Because that matches how often brokers re-expose you. Most people get re-listed three to four times a year, so we time the removal cycle to stay ahead of it. Running full removals more often would not help much, since the brokers need time to even re-post.

Why removal timing varies so much

Once we request a removal, the broker controls how fast it happens. Some take your data down within hours. Others take days or weeks, and a few drag on for a couple of months or require a manual confirmation step. We do not mark a record Complete until we go back and verify it is truly removed.

So two records found on the same day can clear on completely different timelines. That is the site’s pace, not a delay on our end.

What you can expect to see, and when

  • Right after signup: your initial results and Shield Score.
  • Ongoing: new exposures appear in your Privacy Center as they are found.
  • About every three months: a fresh removal cycle, with records moving from Pending to Complete as they verify.
  • Weekly: your Shield Score refreshes, and you get a short report if it moved.

If your account is paused or not on an active plan, ongoing scans stop until you are active again, which is a common reason someone stops seeing updates.

The bottom line

Clever Shield scans fast at signup, keeps watching continuously, and re-runs full removals about every three months to stay ahead of the brokers. Quiet stretches usually mean the system is doing its job in the background, not that it has stopped. And your weekly Shield Score is the easiest way to see your progress at a glance.
